Shayla Baggett, Labor Doula

The pain that you’ve been feeling can’t compare to the joy that is coming.- Romans 8:18

My journey into motherhood is what sparked my interest in becoming a birth doula. When my husband and I found out we were expecting our son, I knew that I wanted to take a low intervention, holistic approach to my prenatal care and birth. As we made strides in preparing for the birth of our baby, it became evident that there was a huge lack of informational support in my birthing community. Our approach was far different from any of our family, friends, or community members. This resulted in us feeling alone, scared, and confused. We desperately needed informational support so that we could make informed choices about our options, we needed emotional support to have the confidence to advocate for ourselves, and we needed physical support during the trials of labor and to help establish good breastfeeding habits after birth.

After I gave birth to my son and reflected on my pregnancy, labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period as a whole, I saw a void. My partner and immediate family were a great support system, but ultimately they were not experts in prenatal health, labor, birth, etc. Neither my husband nor my mother had experienced unmedicated birth or breastfed therefore, they could not provide me with the type of support that I so greatly needed. This made me realize that there are so many other mothers in my community who may have faced or are facing the same void in support. I wanted to do something about this, I wanted to help mothers and families find their voice and advocate for themselves. I wanted to help mothers’ feel heard, validated and supported through every twist and turn of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

I decided to become a certified birth doula through BEST doula training and am currently in the process of becoming a Certified Placenta Encapsulator and Certified Childbirth Educator. I believe that everyone should get to experience the birth of their dreams. I want to support families in making their dreams come true, one birth at a time!

I also enjoy helping others achieve relaxation and rejuvenation through prenatal, infant, deep tissue, and Swedish massage therapy, organic facials and body treatments, and facial and body waxing.
